During the early 20th century, Oliver Springs became a center for moonshining, as many residents turned to illegal distilling to make a living. In the 1930s, the town was the site of a shootout between local law enforcement and a gang of moonshiners, which resulted in the death of two officers and several gang members.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the city began to decline as the coal and lumber industries declined, and many residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, the town experienced a resurgence as tourism and outdoor recreation became popular in the area.
Oliver Springs is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking, fishing, and camping. The city also has many historic sites and landmarks, including the Oliver Springs Railroad Depot and the former site of the Oliver Springs Seminary.
