Rockford, Tennessee, is a small city in Blount County with a rich history of over two centuries. The city was founded in 1792 and was called for the rocky Ford on the Little River immediately south of town.
The Cherokee Nation formerly lived in what is now Rockford. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the mid-1700s, largely of Scots-Irish heritage, drawn by the region’s lush terrain.

Following the war, the region continued to flourish and prosper. Completing the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad in the mid-1800s aided regional economic development. The railroad made carrying commodities to and from the area easier, resulting in greater business.
Rockford was a popular tourist resort throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. The city’s magnificent surroundings, as well as its numerous mineral springs, drew many visitors. The springs were thought to have medicinal effects. Thus, various hotels and resorts were built nearby.
In the early 1900s, Rockford also became known for its marble production. The city was home to several marble quarries, producing some of the world’s finest marble. The marble was used to build several notable structures, including the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Despite its many successes, Rockford has also faced its share of challenges. In 1916, a devastating flood swept through the area, causing significant damage to the city and surrounding region. In the following years, the city struggled to recover from the disaster.
